Our behaviours are ways of being and strategies that we have learnt from our past.
They helped us to process and deal with the world around us at the time they first appeared.
If behaving in a certain way got us safety, gave us something we wanted or met a need in us then we are likely to repeat it in the future. If repeating the behaviour continued to have positive results it will become an unconscious way of responding when in a similar position again.
More difficult behaviours people display have often been born out of difficult experiences. They have a positive intent at the time they are learnt, often in childhood. But in our adult life they can be destructive.
These old programs can be updated at any point in our lives, even as an adult.
